Briggs Opposed Twin

Gentlemen, I have a cub cadet 582 with a 16 hp Briggs
opposed twin in it. Rebuilt the carburetor and it runs good but
when it sets for a few days I have to take the air cleaner off
and put gas directly down the carb to get it to start. Any ideas
why it needs to be primed every time? Any ideas on fixes?
 
Fuel is leaking back away from carb when you shut it off over time . Check your fuel pump , check to see if fuel line has any cracks in it that is big enough to leak air or pressure off . Look for some wet spots on it . Last , but not least check that choke is working well and closing all the way . Adjust if necessary .

Also,check to see if carb could be worn out around seals , shafts ,and intake gaskets letting air in and pressure off. Also , make sure that you put the carb back together right with the right kit.

Orrr.... you could put one of those little fuel shut off valves in inline. Solve a lot of goofy problems. Ebay, only a buck a piece.

Does your carburetor have a black plastic fuel pump on the side of it? Only a hand full of the carburetors for those engines didn't have one.

That one still has the fuel tank above and behind the engine, doesn't it?

If it does have a fuel pump, did you get all the little hair springs back into place correctly when you rebuilt the carburetor? If they are not in the fuel pump correctly it will not pump and may not gravity feed well enough to refill the carburetor bowl.

The only other thing I can think of is the carburetor bowl has a tiny hole in it and you lose all the fuel from the carburetor when you shut it off.
 
Yes it had the fuel pump on the back of the carb. I will take it back apart. Yes the tank is up and behind the engine. The tank outlet isn?t higher than the carb though so it won?t quite gravity feed I guess. Thanks for the input.
 
Could be losing fuel through the float valve. A worn or dirty float valve in the carb won't close. Check for fuel in your crankcase, dilutes the oil and can cause overheating or piston seizing.
