Walk behind high weed mowers

Are there any older multispeed mowers?
When using a single speed mower, if the weeds get really heavy, I have to slow the ground speed and therefore the blade speed decreases, just when it needs to be maximum. I have Jari, Roof and Gravely walk behinds and have the same problem with all.
And none have reverse. Can any be made multispeed?
Thanks,
Slowpoke.

DR makes a range of Field and Brush mowers. They are gear driven, 3 speeds forward and one reverse. I bought mine in 2007 does that qualify as older....? www.DRpower.com

You spoke of the gravely so I wonder which older machine your experience is with. I have a Model L that does a great job in tall grass light brush with the bush hog head. I consider it to be with infinite speed control in both directions as I feather the clutch from no motion to locked in forward or reverse. Ive heard both camps, the one that states this is mis-use and the other that states this is by design. I do see the point that the clutch being slipped is increased wear but I have yet to wear it out.i can inch it along or full engagement and all speeds in between.

I have a David Bradley 600 2 wheeler with the speed changer and reverser on it. It is awesome with the sickle bar mower on it when you slow it all the way down it just creeps along. The thing that's nice is you can do it on the fly, my Bolens Power-Ho has an adjustable sheave but you have to shut it down and re adjust the belt tensioner. I believe the larger Bolens Versa Matic can shift on the fly but I have never operated one. TJ

I have the Gravely L also. When I got it, many years ago, the pulley on the rotary mower was slipping on the spindle and damaging it. I ordered the last new spindle in the world and tightened the nut as far as I could. After only a few seconds of cutting I realized it was also slipping. So I shut it down to prevent any damage, put it away forgot about it. But in the meantime I picked up a torque wrench with 4000 inch/pounds capacity and a torque multiplier, so maybe I will try again to get the nut tight enough to prevent slipping. I don't know what the torque should be; maybe it can be found on the 'net.
