Briggs engine

What would cause oil to be sucked into breather on a 14.5 horse Briggs lawn mower engine? It would run then puff white smoke and die. I changed air and gas filters and cleaned breather on side of crankcase.
Still the same. Thanks, Kirk (also new spark plug)

There is a tube going to the intake from the side of the engine and where it hooks at the engine is a PCV valve and if it goes bad oil can be sucked into the intake and cause that problem

There are several totally different 14.5 hp Briggs engines. If it has overhead valves, either:

1.the head gasket is blown. On the overhead valve Briggs engines, it is very common for the head gasket to blow on the side where the push rods are and leak combustion pressure into the crankcase. From there it pushes oil through the crankcase breather into the intake where its pulled through engine and burned along with the fuel.

2. there is gasoline in the oil (or you are using too thin viscostiy oil, 30 wt. recommended here in NC.) Gasoline thins the oil, then it is whipped into a froth that is easily pushed through the crankcase breather.

3. Or the rings are totally shot and you are getting too much combustion pressure in the crankcase.

If it does not have overhead valves, its probably either #2 or #3.

Sounds like the fuel shutoff solenoid isn't working correctly. Fuel in the oil thins it way out and that's a bad thing. Daughter had a couple of Briggs powered mowers that did the same thing. Solenoids aren't that expensive and I got to where we had a spare in case one failed.

Other thing you can do is to put a shutoff on the fuel line. Bad thing is you have to remember to shut it off when you are done mowing.
