Had a really strange thing happen while I was mowing with my ZTR. Ran over a dead tree branch hidden in tall grass, clang crunch and the mower started banging like a blade was hitting something. Shut off the PTO and ran it back to the shop knowing I had bent a blade or worse.

Lifted the front end with my engine hoist so I could see under the deck. Rotated the blades and didn't see anything wrong. Let it down and removed the plastic pulley guards. Immediately saw the deck belt was bulged out from one of the blade pulleys.

What had happened was a piece of the dead branch about 3/4" long had wedged itself into the V of the pulley and every time the belt hit that it would rub on the guard plus make the idler jump. That piece of wood had to have had the proper V shape to wedge itself into that pulley tight enough to stay and it had to sneak past the guards and hit just right. Weird...

Not as weird as you might think. I have worked at a mower dealership for ten years and have removed sticks and rocks from pulleys, on average of 3 mowers per year. Most of the time the customer says, I did not hit anything or I pick up sticks before I mow.

seen that all time from rocks, nuts, sticks, even 1/4 inch steel nuts own lawn shop for eleven years seen about all there is to see, still at this typing trying to close it down.

Yup....you are not the only one. Common
thing that happens is a twig or small
branch bows up under the machine and gets
sucked into the pulleys. Two biggies is
when that stick breaks the drive belt or
even better it splits one of the pulleys on
top of the mandrel. Now you have a busted
pulley to replace never mind the belt. Next
time you need a belt you can pick up one of
those kevlar belts, they work great. Some
of them are a real pretty blue color.
