John Deere 317

Hey everyone, I just picked up a 317 a couple days ago. It?s in
rough shape and smokes a bit but seems to run pretty well
and has plenty of power. It?s my first 300 series tractor and I
want to do a lot to it. I?m pretty good at fabricating parts so I
planned on building one of the PF engineering loaders for it
and putting a three point hitch on it and depending on how
terrible of a job it is I might try and add power steering as well
down the line. So basically I might as well just buy a 318 but I
got it for 750 and in my area that is a very good price
(Colorado) and it will give me a fun fabrication project. Any
ideas on where is the best place to start? Also I was thinking
about putting a rear PTO pulley shaft on it but the only one I
can find so far is mounted on a John Deere 300 and I don?t
know if that will fit my 317? Also I was looking around for
engine side cowl covers and it seems that the couple for sale
are about 120 a pair, is that a reasonable price? Any help
would definitely be appreciated, thanks.

Your sentiments sound like mine, a few years back. But time moves on. Sadly, $750 for a 317 with issues and parts missing isn't a "steal".

I have moved on to 318's and 322's, which have much better engines, power steering, and a better driveshaft, and 318's can be found for under a grand.

That doesn't leave much $$$ for replacing the OH'ing the engine, replacing the missing covers and adding power steering, IMHO.

one question why would you do that. that unit in my area is 300 at best get the series that has all that can be had for under 1000 in my area. last one I had finally got 500.00

Yeah unfortunately in Colorado a running 317 or 318 will normally run you at least 1700 they sell for up to 3500 out here if they?re in good condition and have a couple attachments. The price of the old tractors and implements out here it?s much higher then most of the US I don?t know why. For instance a good running 9N,2N,8N will normally sell here with no attachments for 2 to 3000

My buddy bought a 317 with a good running engine, as good as a KT Kohler can be, but a junk driveshaft for $50 at a consignment sale. Last I knew the 317 he bought new has had 4 new driveshafts plus the factory one.

I took a 317 in on trade a couple years ago.... just finally started working on it a few days ago. I put in a new solenoid yesterday and invented several new cuss words during that little project...Lol

Nothing wrong with a KT engine if its been properly maintained, Ive had a few thru the shop and they have all run fine, this one included.
