Deere 212 not pulling gas after refill

I filled my 212 yesterday, then cut grass steadily for about 2 hours and ran it out of gas. After refill, would not start. I tried spraying starting fluid into mouth of carburetor, it would start, but would not keep running on its own. I could spray the fluid intermittently, and the engine would keep running but not steady. Seemingly the fuel pump is not pulling gas, even with about 2 gallons freshly put in tank. Need remedy to get this thing running so I can finish yard and put it away. Suggestions please!!

The fuel pump can lose its prime like a water well pump. Pull the hose from the tank to the fuel pump and make sure it runs a good
stream. Pull the hose from the fuel pump to the carb and make sure it's not plugged. Pull the bottom reservoir off the carb and
make sure it's not full of stuff. If that reservoir is full of things that look like dead ants, you need to replace your fuel
hoses.

Hook the fuel hoses backup and put the tractor nose down. If the hoses are clean and the carb is clean and it still won't start
you need a fuel pump.

If lines are OK and there isn't debris in the fuel the pump may have failed, NOT uncommon with those Kohler mechanical fuel pumps.
 
I don't like running a Kohler out of gas. What works best for me is holding a rubber tipped air nozzle on the gas cap vent while cranking it and it don't need much air either or you can stuff a rag around the air nozzle in the tank.

Today (Thursday) I tried starting without fluid, etc. To my surprise and pleasure, it started up immediately and seems to be ok. I may be home free!!
