John Deere 212

So I have a John Deere 212 with a Koehler K301. I wasn?t getting any spark so I changed the coil and condenser. I also confirmed I had 12v at the positive side of the coil and continuity at the points (set to .20 gap). Now I have spark, but only after I let the key return from the start position to the run position. It will start and run fine after I release it to run but won?t start while cranking in the start position. Does this point to a bad key switch?

Yes!

Either it's failed, or someone has installed the wrong switch, or possibility mucked up the connections in the multiterminal connector that plugs onto the switch.
