Hard starting JD 165 Hydro

When the drive quit working correctly, I bought a new mower. The 165 sat for two years. To start for the first time each year, I found it easier if I primed the carb. by filling the gas line, until it was full of gas. This spring I have started it a few times. About the only way to get it started is to add gas to the carb. It is as if the carb is empty of gas, each time. After I shut it off, I looked it over to see if it was leaking, but I did not see any wet spots. I mowed leaves for about twenty minutes yesterday and it ran good. I bet it will start today, but not two days from now. Could the problem be a weak fuel pump? Or is it a carb problem? If I can get this mower to start reliably, My son will be using it to cut his mother's lawn.
Thank you

Not sure if you have the new or old type carb.

Sounds like the carb needs a good cleaning.

Also to add.

The new type has a fuel shutoff solenoid on the side of the carbs bowl. If you have the new type. The solenoid could be sticking and not allowing fuel to enter the main jet.

You can get both types of new aftermarket carbs for less than $40 that work just as good as the $100+ factory units.

Wonder if they are made in the same factory or just down the street. Don't
know. Same thing with the NIKI carbs on the Briggs twin V engines. The new
carbs work perfectly and are less than 2/3 the price of a repair kit. And they
are complete and ready to screw on.

I can not golf worth crap anymore, but while out there today, it occurred to me that I should clean the carb. I had figured that as well as it runs now, that the carb is functioning properly.Maybe not though.
I cleaned the carb for a 14.5 hp B and S, and then tried to start it. It back fired and died with each attempt. While out golfing, I remembered that I had not plugged in the solenoid thingy on the bottom of the carb. Guess I will try it again tomorrow.
