Tecumseh motor blowing oil

I just bought a chipper/shredder with a 8Hp. Tecumseh engine. It runs good and seems to start OK with barely getting the flywheel moving. the problem I am having is after an hour of run time I noticed oil coming out from the base of the fill tube. I am not sure how much oil came out yet as I ran out of time when cleaning up so It got shoved into a storage spot until I can look at it but I think I lost around a cup of oil. Oil looks clean and it was not over filled when I started. Is it possible that where the tube goes into the motor there is a defective seal or do I have bigger problems. It does not smoke when running.
Thanks for any advise, never had something like this before.

I am thinking that tube was supposed to screw tight enough into the engine to seal up. It may be cracked.

Depending on which engine you have, some of those dipstick tubes are no longer available. If so, on some of them you can seal up the hole with the same style fill plug as usually found down low on the side of the Tecumseh cover. This does away with your dipstick, but at least you can run the engine.

Which model is the engine Tecumseh built many models of 8 hp engine all with differences

Coming out of the base of the tube is usally caused by a bad or worn O-ring. They wear out over time.

Look for the small screw that holds the tube to the engine.

Remove the screw.

Pull the tube out of the block. Careful for if the oil level is a little over filled oil will run out. Tilting the engine away from the oil filler side or drain some out helps.

Clean the hole in the block to remove the oil flim.

Remove the O ring and inspect it. It should good condition and shaped like a triangle. The O ring is shaped like the slip rings used on kitchen and bath drains.

Clean the tube and the slot the O ring goes in.

Now your choices. Buy a new one or reinstall the O ring and apply a small dab of high temp silicone around the O ring.

Either way. Install the tube and press down on it as you tighten the retaining screw. The tube is slotted for that purpose.

I hope to get it apart this week end but have a big list of things to do before so we will have to see. Thanks I appreciate the info.
