F525 with 17 hp kaw. Intermittent starting. Solenoid engages intermittently. Will start if I hot wire it. Gone through switches. Changed ignition and did work but quit again. Has to be wiring or relay. If use test light on purple wires on ignition switch it click solenoid. Need a schematic.
 

DEERE sells a "starting improvement kit" that fits many machines, (NOT sure if yours is on the list, but it will probably work anyhow) consisting of a little wiring harness and a "Bosch-style" "ice cube relay" to solve the problem of intermittent starter engagement as the machine, the wiring harness and connectors and a safety switch or two age.

If you are able to understand a basic schematic, you can do it yourself without buying the kit.

Kit is DEERE #AM107421.

I have a F525 and the kit you stated will work on a F525. I have installed one on mine and is very easy to install.
The kit will cure the starting problem.

Check the single wire on the switch at the ignition switch. This is the wire that goes straight to the solenoid,they are known to corroid the switch and the spade connector too.

The "Bosch-style" "ice cube relays" are typically rated between 20 and 40 Amps. (The slightly larger version with bigger terminals is typically rated at 50 to 60 Amps.)

Likely it takes only about 3 to 5 Amps to operate the starter solenoid, so about any "Bosch-style" "ice cube relay" should do the job.
 
16A is main supply current. Just going by wire gauge to solenoid you should be close. Have to get one out of something equivalent
rather than paying 90$ for JD kit!
 
This thing is driving me. Tempted to put an switch direct from battery to solenoid. Switch has 5 wires yellow and red hot. Pair of white on one lug. Two purple. One feeds starter. Kinda remind me of a 1963 Honda 50 circuit. If one purple hot it will turn over. If I lose voltage does nothing. New switch did work. Know it is a connection issue. Fuse block?

I don't get it.
You pay thousands of dollars for a John Deere mower.. Why should someone have to pay John Deere more for a part just to get the engine to run?

If purple wire to the starter solenoid has NO power when the key is turned to "CRANK" (obviously) the "starting improvement kit" won't fix the problem by itself.

The problem COULD be in the ignition switch, the PTO switch, the brake switch, the Time Delay Module, something wrong with the wiring, or probably a couple of things I didn't think to mention.

The wiring on this sort of equipment has gotten REALLY complicated because of the need to protect careless or unskilled operators from themselves.

You REALLY need the "shop manual", DEERE TM1475, almost $250 from DEERE, but $30 and up on ebay because it has detailed wiring diagrams and troubleshooting flow charts to work through an issue like this if you are going to successfully fix it yourself.
