Hi, it ran 2 years ago when it was parked. Left outside with a covered with a cheap tarp, bad idea. New battery and no spark.have no idea what or where to check. Thanks

I'm not sure what engine you have but the first place to start would be to clean the points. Most likely that's your problem.

little rectangular box on the carburetor side of the engine, down near the oil pan, facing the front of the tractor.
Two standard headed screws attach the cover, unless someone has messed with the points before-then there will only be one screw!

Thanks for the info.points looked wet. Cleaned them up and it started right up.but it will only run with the choke 1/8 to 1/4 way open . very picky anywhere else and it stops running.it is a Kohler k241.any ideas?. Thanks

Now you need to clean the fuel system. Your fuel flow is restricted and with the choke on it runs. Prolly will need t pull carb off and apart for cleaning. The replacement carbs for the kohler engines are fairly cheap. 20 bucks or less. Be glad it not a Tecumseh, they are near 100 bucks. Or you can get a rebuild kit for your carb. Maybe a good cleaning will work. Be careful with the gaskets.

Hmmm... I must have gotten a great deal on the new catb for my Tecumseh engine on a large chipper/shredder. Was only $30 or so, found on ebay..
