John Deere LX279 Traction/Drive Belt Replacement...

Looked in the Owner's Manual, and online, and I can't find the instructions for replacing the traction/drive belt (NOT the deck belts) on a JD LX279.

I had one garden tractor where you had to drop the transmission half out to get
enough clearance to slip the belt in. Stop at a dealer and ask. If they are
nice guys the will tell you how or show you the procedure on their computer
screen. Especially if you buy the belt from them. Finding true "service"
manuals on line is not the easiest thing. One place you didn't look was Ebay.
There are guys who sell copies of those books on CD.

I really thought someone would answer who actually knew your model.

I've changed drive belts on many JD tractors so here are some of the things that may or may not apply:
Please note I do not know if a LX279 is gear drive or hydro, so some of these things may not apply.

1. Sometimes you have to take the tie rods off and fit the drive belt in place.
In at least one case, you have to remove the support for the lower steering shaft, it reaches from one frame rail to the other turn it
around the steering shaft a few degrees to get clearance for the belt, put the belt up over it, then bolt it back into place.

2. On some Deere hydros, there is a long spring that tensions a pair of idlers that keep the belt tight. It is near the left frame rail.
You have to figure out some way to get the spring off, then put it back in place.

3. I always recommended the customer replace all the idler pulleys that are on that belt when they put a new belt on. Its bad to do all
that work and then have to take it apart again to replace the idler pulley and usually the belt you just put on.

4. Be sure you have the belt on the proper side of all the belt guides and on all the pulleys before you start the engine. If your old
belt is still in place, pictures taken before you remove it are a great help.

TRK: yes, it's a hydro.
The belt is still in place, but I don't think it has ever been changed. I wanted to change it when it fits my schedule, NOT when it decides to break.
I'll check with the dealer, where I bought the belt.
