MTD Dayton tractor

If it's the model like the nice silver refinished model or the red Dayton, it's an MTD 990.
The big clue is the bulge for the generator in the left side of the grill. It's a horse.
It was sold under a lot of different hardware store brands.
Later ones had a big heavy hydrostatic drive.
The one with the Briggs opposed twin is not the same tractor.

Will the 16hp with the manual tranny handle heavy grass knee high to waist high with the 52" belly mower?

Waist high???? ... maybe you should get a swather..Lol

Most any mower will struggle with grass that high... you will prob have to cut it twice... once to get it down under a foot and then a second time to get a nice finish.

Wow, that's asking a lot of a "lawn" mower"
Probably lots of power but it will sure put some stress on the mower belts.
You need a sickle bar for cutting "hay".....it takes a fraction of the power to "slice" off the stems.

I have a couple of those walk behinds. Brand Jari.
Trouble is high weeds like to jam up on the body.
I have to stop and remove them or carry a stick in one hand to try and dislodge them.
I know of very few small tractors with sickle bar attachments.

If you look at the picture closely, you will see a 1/4" rod about 14" long sticking up in front of the hood....it moves back and forth with the cut bar and sorta "parts the way" so weeds don't jam up on the hood. Works really well.....However, when you cut a lot of big weeds and small brush, that rod will sometimes break off.
Seems like I have to replace mine at least once a season.
I will tell you this.....Those Jaris are tough machines and built to last forever even though they are sorta crude.
 
No wonder mine jams up, the rod at the most is 9" long and bends over from the weeds. It's soft metal and broke off several times.
I think the original must be tempered to keep it from bending.
 
I found some hardened 1/4" rod that I use....it doesn't bend very much but breaks off clean when it goes.
I think the rod I got came from the torsion springs used in the older cars to keep the trunk lid up.
I've always thought of drilling the bracket out to 5/16".....I think the bigger rod would last a lot longer.
 
My thoughts exactly. I also thought that a fixed "V" shaped rod extending about a foot past the bar might separate the weeds enough to solve the problem. But that probably would only work if the weeds were standing straight up.
