Seller's ad: Early 80s Dayton garden tractor with 16 HP Briggs&stratton, ran when parked (I messed with it a little and it needs a new points condenser). I have to many projects as is. Has PTO drivin rototiller and a 50inch mower deck as well. Have all the manuals for the deck, tiller and tractor. Very complete tractor. Nothing is missing. 500 OBO

MTD 3Z588
Seller not sure of tranny type.
Front axle might be cast iron?
Says manual tiller lift.
Will sell for $300.
100 mile one way to get it.

Is it a buy?
Thanks

Sry missed this the other day...

Yes go get it... its a fricken tank... I have two mid 70s MTDs with the single cyl Briggs and Peerless 2300 4 speed

There were some changes cosmetically by the early 80s but they are still big heavy tractors around 1000 lbs.... its the same thing as a White 1600

I just went through this MTD over the winter and Im still in the process of fitting a snowblower on it... its another mid 70s model basically identical to the red Columbia....

original paint on it still... the Columbia is the Canadian built version... the silver one was built in the USA. Mine are 960s so they look a bit differant and have a fiber disc clutch that I dont think was used in the 916/918 models but they are all part of MTDs big 900 series. Ive used the Columbia to break ground with a 10" plough.... pull a cultivator or push snow with a 54" front blade... bulldozed a small building with it once.

If its still available you should be on the road by now ;)

Hey Lance,

Does MTD still make "real" garden tractors anymore?

I like the Jakes and Jake built Fords but I've seen a few of the early MTDs and was impressed with their construction.

NOBODY builds real GTs anymore... these days you have to spend 10k+ on a CUT tractor just to do the same chores that some of these mid 70s/80s GTs could do.

Im a big fan of the Jake/Fords, I have two opensided Lgt models and Im currently working on a closed sided Lgt100.... BUT... if I want to pull a heavy load I pull out the Columbia... the combination of the 16hp B/S and a proper fiber disc clutch mated to the Peerless 2300 in a 1000 lb tractor is hard to beat.

I flip GTs as a semi-retirement income, been doing it for about 8 years now and Ive sold over 160 tractors to date... I keep the Fords because Im a Ford fan at heart... I keep the Columbia because I have yet to see anything match its pulling capabilities.

few years back I hooked a tree root with this cultivator and tires... front wheels lifted right off the ground... prob just a few inches but sitting in the seat it felt like a foot. Couldnt go ahead, couldnt go back... had to get a shovel and chainsaw to get the cultivator out.
