JD 165 hydro static trans axle

The drive developed a problem two years ago. After twenty minutes of use it would coast down my yard and then pause for a second before it would resume driving forward. It didn't stop, just slowed and then re engaged itself. So I bought a JD 204. Today I viewed an on line video and saw that the fan that is on the belt pulley had fins that were about 1.5 inches tall. My pulley has about 1/8th inch nubs. Could the problem with my hydro static drive be that it is over heating and all I would need to do is replace the fan?
Thank you

The only way to know for sure is to pay your money (for the new fan) and take a chance.

Keep in mind those tractors are about 30 years old.

Fan is # M91192, replaced by # ET17698 , only about $11 at the dealer.

I found the part and the number, but my computer is not loading the web site with the price and ordering info. Thank you for the price. I had stopped at a dealer yesterday and he said that he did not have it in stock. I think I will have them order it for me.

I am looking for a reliable rider for my son to use at his mother's house. For $11 he can use my 33 year old machine. I hate to scrap anything that only needs a simple repair. Her yard is flat and it might work perfectly just the way it is now.

no you need check drive belt first. that fan was is option on every mower unit out there. trust me there is several out there broke like that. fan has nothing to do with your problem.

"you need check drive belt first"

GOOD post, ZTR!

And check the pulleys for wear that is allowing the belt to "bottom out" in the groove, and lose it's grip!

I ordered a new fan for the pulley this morning. I will also have a better look at the belt. Maybe I will buy a new one when I pick up the fan. I know I replaced one of the belts, but the drive belt might be an original factory belt.

Starting and stopping on its own while mowing could be related to low oil level or air in the system.

I have a Husqvarna with a Tuff Torq hydro trans that has not had a fan on it in over 6 or 7 years and it has never acted like that. When the drive belt gets worn the ground speed will slow down. If it were the belt slipping. You will smell it burning or see smoke..

Again. I will put my money on 1, low oil level. 2, air in the system.
