Massey Ferguson 10 clutch won't release

First, Thanks to all who helped me with getting drive belts for this lawn tractor. They arrived Friday.

I put them on, but the clutch won't release.

I moved all four of the transmission pulley spacers to the inside of the two flanges. Are they supposed to be more than four spacers?

The front belt guard was about 3/4" from the pulley. I straightend up and re-bent it so that it almost touches the belt when tight.

There was what looked like a broken-off belt guide beneath the front belt. I made another out of a bar of steel and put it in the same place. I see that it can't be very close to the belt because of the way the belt runs to the top of the variable pulley when in the slow setting.

Are there any other belt guides supposed to be on there that are missing from my mower?

Is the belt supposed to slip at the engine pulley? Or does it slip somewhere else when the clutch is released?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
