Honda GX 160 On a 2 inch trash pump. Engine started running bad like it was running very rich, the spark plug is very sooty. Messed up the old carb so put on a new carburetor and within two minutes of running the new spark plug is all sooty black. Has no power checked the coil gap cleaned up the fly wheel. Compression is at 50 psi with oil added to the cylinder it goes up to 75 it?s still acting like it?s just running very rich any suggestions. Exhaust is black.

You have some kind of carb problem. Check your oil level too. The grey dip stick you unscrew there is a hash pattern on it. The oil should just be to the top of the hash. Also check your vent hose from the engine. You want to give this video a watch. Both of my Hondas worked perfectly after I followed this lesson. Very well layed out how to do. All you need are a couple of tools and a spray can of carb cleaner. Bet you are missing that secret jet under the black plug. Also the little adjustment stop thing is held on with hot glue. Please get back to us so we know how you did.

Jeffcat, you?re thinking the same way I?m thinking. I did watch the video everything points back to the carb. that?s why I replaced it with a brand new carb, and it made no difference I?m stuck on this one.

By any chance is there gas in the oil? This happens to Hondas often when they are left sitting with the fuel turned on. Honda knew that when they put fuel shutoffs on most of their engines. If there is gas in the crankcase, it will thin the oil to the point it will foam and be drawn through the crankcase vent into the carburetor throat where it goes back through the engine and soots up the plug and sometimes smokes.

Another thing that is easy to do with a Honda is to flip one of the intake gaskets where the hole in it no longer lines up with the hole in the carburetor. Or flip the insulator over so the holes don't line up. These holes are connected to the bowl vent and with it being stopped up, The vacuum in the main nozzle pulls too much fuel and the engine runs rich.

How about were trk says something about that gasket? As I said both of my 8hp. Hondas work fantastic. The one had a really trashed carb. but after following that video it worked beauty! Behind the carb on the side of the engine, look were the breather hose comes out. Does that plate come off? Is there a little flap valve. I havent been into that engine in two years. Worse case you may have a really trashed engine. You could do a leakdown test. Don't know, Hondas are usually so reliable.
