Trouble shooting the generator/voltage regulator

Hi guys. I apologize for all the questions on my cub Cadet
100. The tractor sat for at least 5 years without a battery in it.
The generator/starter was supposedly rebuilt right before the
steering went out. It doesn?t seem to be charging. How do I go
about trouble shooting the charging system? Do I need to
polarize the generator and voltage regulator? Do you know
what the air gap is supposed to be in the two points on the
regulator. I really appreciate your advice.

Just want to add that we know your CC 100 has a Kohler in it, but the only difference between that and Briggs is the shaft in the generator itself turns backwards because it drives from the other end of the engine. Troubleshooting should be the same.

young tractor:

Simple test. Ground the "F" terminal on the S/G briefly, and watch your Amp Gauge. If the Amp gauge goes to Full Charge, then you have a V/R problem. If it does not, then you have a S/G problem.

Use a volt-ohm meter on the battery when it running and not. Volts should increase by about 2 when running. If not it isn't charging. There already is a post on polarizing it.
