My John Deere 318, 1983 B43G starter broke, the aluminum casting on the starter broke, engine block is ok.
Are there any shortcuts to replace the starter? Does the engine have to be completely removed?

It has to come loose so you can raise it for clearance. It is a good time for cleaning, and oil pan gaskets if it is leaking. My
brother remembered his drain plug was leaking and needed work 5 minutes after he was done with the starter and it was running.

I agree here, although the ctm and tech manual say to remove it. You may be able to get away with just lifting it. But as you well know deere says "1. Remove Engine".
