Tecumseh 8 hp Start problem

I got the engine on an Ariens 824 snow blower, came from consignment sale so nothing know of previous life. Problem is when using the hand pull start, it will pull ok to a point and then jerk the rope back--like to rip my arm out of the shoulder socket. I have piston at top of stroke and the flywheel key is at about 11 o'clock. Is this correct? I was told that the flywheel could move on crank. Or is there some other problem. The 110volt starter spins it ok and starts, seems to run ok. Got some snow here so could use it.

Don't know if this applies to your engine, but on some Tecumsehs the magneto "stator" is bolted to the engine with two bolts in slotted holes, and ignition timing can be adjusted there.

If it's old enough to have point (doubt it) point gap will affect timing.

Verify that flywheel key is not partially sheared, and you might as well check valve tappet gap.

If you have a engine with automatic mechanical compression
release check valve clearance.

Remove and clean the carburetor. Most Tecumseh engines start very easy and most snow blowers used to use Tecumseh engines.
Does your machine have electric start? If it does give it a shot of either and see if it fires. If it fires the carb is your problem.

Ferget it. Looks like might be a 2 piece piston. Deal with it some other day. George

If it starts and runs OK then just don't shut if off where you can't reach it with a cord, this is no time of year to tear apart a snowblower that works!
