I have and old 18hp Briggs twin2 I/C in a Terramite Loader Backhoe I do not believe this is original to the tractor it needs rebuilding I can not find a model number metal tag with a number or anything identify this engine can anyone be of help.
Thanks

The older B/S engines dont have an addon "ID Plate or Tag", the numbers are stamped directly onto the engine tins/shrouds, usually on the flywheel cover.

From what I could pick up on the internet the Twin II was a opposed cylinder engine ?, Can anyone advise me of a good source of rebuild parts. Thanks

Most of the later opposed twins that I have seen had the tag riveted to the flywheel cover on the side near the flywheel. Some of the older
ones may have had the numbers stamped in. Look for 2 unused holes if you don't see a tag there. Some do fall off.

That said, I am thinking there were only 2 different cylinder bore diameters and there is a good chance that everything else was the same
internally, unless the crankshaft 'throw' or crankpin offset was different. So the right person with a service manual could probably help
you narrow down to close enough to what you have to get parts if you know your cylinder bore and maybe the distance the piston travels in
the cylinder it could be figured out. I don't have a service manual for those engines though.

Thanks been a lot of help I'm a old man that twisted wrenches as a kid in the late 60/70 289 283 318 383 etc never small engins Thanks Again

Both of my Briggs V-twin engines the information is stamped on the little
aluminum valve cover. Might have been put on upside down. Wash off any oil and
crud off and see if the numbers are there.

Tossing my hat in the ring I agree that the older small, singles, like used on push lawn mowers were stamped on the flywheel cover on the side and
the V twins with the sheetmetal valve covers, (I have 4 of them) are stamped right on top of the cover. Several sets of numbers there. Ebay has been
a good source for quality parts, fast shipping, guaranteed, for me. Your machine part number may differ slightly from something listed because of all
the variations of the product to suit OEM equipment suppliers. Some are just cosmetic or relocation of something or other.

Having been one of those wrench twisters of that age too, and having twisted off head bolts on auto engines before I was old enough to know what
proper torque was, remember you are working aluminum in most cases and you need to watch your torque.....stripped out a sparkplug or two back
then on them too.
