I'm havig a problem removing the oil sump on B&S v-twin engine. I have removed the bolts, the governor, push rods, oil pump. Sump is lose and will easily raise about 1/8 inch where it hits ha hard stop ( metal to metal). Seems to be around the shaft. I do not know what is binding. Any thoughts/help will be appreciated. Thanks. I'm new to the site but have lurked for sometime.

It sounds like you did all the normal things.

Is it a blown engine? On those anything is possible.

Also it might help to remove the pto side seal and see if you can see any damage to the crank or lower bearing. You did remove most of the rust on the crank below the seal didn't you?

Are you working on an Intek? I just took the sump off one a month ago, and it slid right off when all the bolts were loosened.

Hi, I had a blown con rod some time ago. There was a bolt under neath that was hard to see. In your casse it may have backed out a bit. Check it again Ed Will Oliver BC

This is an Intek engine. It is about 4 yrs old low hours and ran fine. It was leaking oil around the sump seal so I thought that mowing season is over so I will replace the sump seal. That's where my problem started. The pto shaft is smooth and clean. I have removed the oil seal and see no restrictions in that area. Looks like I will have to destroy the sump to get it off. There is no visible restrictions around the outside of the sump. I thinking about cutting one end off to see what is preventing removal. Any thoughts?

Lay the engine flywheel down.
Tap the sump back into place.
Recheck the crank shaft especially around the key way slot closest to the sump. Small burrs on the edge of the slot could be causing the problem you describe.

Thanks mulemeat, I tried tapping the sump back down. It didn't
work, it still stops with a metal to metal round when I pull up.
I'm thinking I have no choice but to use a cutting wheel and cut
the sump off. I hate it cause I'll have a big time getting all
of the fines out of the engine. But it is what it is. This small project has become a big PIA.
