JD 316 mower deck spindle

Started to replace mower spindle bearings (46" deck), 1986 JD316. I didn't have an IPL and pretty much assumed the spindle pressed out of the housing downward. Well I managed to break the housing where there is a snap ring.

Is the spindle supposed to press out with the bearings remaining in the housing? Does the large diameter of the spindle come off the spindle? If so, how?

The closest thing I am familiar with is a 318 and 160.

On those, (and the shaft in the picture appears identical) the spindle shaft is straight, The part you call 'large diameter' is a sleeve
that (when new) slides over the shaft.(Rust can change that.) You do have to get the pulley off before you start removing anything else,
because I am thinking the woodruff key in the pulley will not slide down through the bearings.

With the drive sheave and woodruff key removed, the spindle can be pressed "downward", out of the bearings, leaving the bearings and the two snaprings in the casting, to be dealt with later.

Dunno what happened to you, the spindle may have been badly rusted and tough to press out, or the the cast housing could have even been cracked from it's blade having an adventure with an unidentified object.

The spindle did have some fine powdery rust inside the bearing area. I am soaking the remaining spindles in fuel oil to lube them before I start to press them apart.

Before attempting pressing the spindle out I tried to press the drive sheave off. It was tight enough that I was fearful of breaking it. Once I broke it free and removed the woodruff key everything came apart ok----but the casting broke when everything came loose on the initial "POP".

Usually the spindle will press out without a problem. The large diameter ring will unscrew from the spindle. Remove the snapring and press the bearing out.

Bingo! Now that makes sense.

Got the spindle apart but can't seem to post photos now.

One of the bearings shows # Z 9504 RST China. when I search that number I don't get anything that resembles a bearing. Anyone know a number for USA mfg bearing? There are a lot of cheap bearings available on ebay but I prefer to look for a decent bearing.

DEERE has the bearing available under the part number JD9296 for about ten bucks.

If you are a bargain hunter, you can search the interwebs for the industry standard bearing, number, 204RR6.
