B S power Huskee log splitter question

My buddy lent me his log splitter. His son has been using it, and it's been left outside. It has a B & S Quantum motor, and when I changed the oil, about 2 oz of oil came out, the rest was slime. The filter on the hydraulics looks rusty. Anyone know what kind of hydraulic fluid this would use? Or what model of filter it would use? Looks to be about the size of a Ford FL1 filter. The splitter ram works good, but I like to keep equipment up to snuff...When I borrow something, I like to send it back in better shape than it was when it came..

Many splitters I've seen run "R & O hydraulic oil".

Is this "Huskee" a TSC-brand Huskee?

If so, why not stop at a TSC store and see what they recommend for their splitters, they may have a filter as well.

Otherwise, look for any markings/numbers/brand names on the filter or the filter head and post back.

ONE popular brand is "Cross". You may want to GOOGLE "Cross Hydraulic Filter" and see if anything that comes up looks like the one you are working with,
R & O oil

Can't help you on the filter and oil but I can commend you for trying to things right! Good on you!

I have a B&S 35 ton TSC Huskee log splitter. I use the Lenz filter that TSC sells and Lucas hydraulic oil. The Lucas is a hydraulic oil that holds up to heavy use and log splitter oil gets hot. I also use the Lenz filter on my Farmall B hydraulic system.

We tried to start it yesterday, and it would not fire. I pulled on it for a while, and nothing. Then I watched him try to start it and noticed puffs coming from the bottom side of the cylinder head. Yesterday we replaced the head gasket and got it running, and it ran good.

I'm also wondering, when you remove the hydraulic filter, the opening is pointed down, do you lose a lot of fluid when you do this?
