I have a 55 gallon barrel of 20w20 engine oil that I am trying to figure out what to use it for. Would it be ok in the hydraulics of my 446 in Michigan?

I see no real reason as to why you could not use it. No harm will come to the tractor's hydraulic system and it is arguable whether the performance would compromised NOTICEABLY. So.....
give it a try and see how well it works. With a 55 gallon drum, you can afford to change the oil every year. BTW...... your tractor has NO hydrostatics. It is all hydraulic.

The recommended fluid for that tractor is 20W-40 motor oil above freezing and 5W-40 below. As Tom said I doubt that trying 20W20 would do any permanent damage however I would expect that using straight 20W would cause the transmission to be sluggish when very cold and loose a bit of power when very warm with no noticeable difference when in between. For no more oil than the system holds and no more often that it needs changed I think I would stick with mullti grade, depends on what you use it for? Mowing doesn't stress the hydraulics much, but rear PTO loads like tilling or pulling heavy drawbar loads does heat up the oil pretty good.. Like almost everyone else we run 15W40 in all of ours year around. If we need to blow snow on a cold day we shift the range transmission into neutral and push the travel lever forward a bit to warm the oil and everything works fine.
