Simplicity 7016 wiring

I have the tractor starting, and running ok. I feel that I have screwed up , somewhere in my wiring. My problem is that I have to release the starter mode on the key, for the motor to catch the spark, and start up and run. It cranks fine but won't hit and start, till I let go of the key. Where did I goof at? Can't figure it out!

Either you have the wrong ignition switch (there's several variations that look alike outwardly but operate differently internally), the ignition switch is defective, or you have the connection to the ignition system attached to the wrong terminal on the switch.

If it still has a Briggs engine with "magneto" ignition, the ignition switch terminal connected to the ignition system must NEVER get powered with battery voltage, no matter what position the key is in. If this happens typically it will melt/destroy the coil or "armature" as Briggs calls it.

This requires having correct style of switch the shorts that terminal to ground in the "OFF" position, and doesn't connect it to anything in the "START" and "RUN" positions.

Thanks Bob! I will check out the new switch, and move my wire to the coil around, and see what happens. I sure do like that front end loader, and how high it lifts. It should be able to clear the sides on my IH 100 manure spreader. Should be good for cleaning out the alley way, between stalls.

As I asked before, if you have the original style Briggs engine with a "magneto" don't just blindly move the ignition "kill" wire around on the ignition switch terminals, 'cause as I wrote before, feeding battery voltage back into the mag ignition system is NOT a good thing.

In my experience with various small engine and garden tractors, if you have the correct ignition switch for a mag system and look closely at the back of it you will see a copper strap crimped against the metal switch housing and the other end riveted to a terminal on the backside of the switch.

Look at the photo below, your ignition switch may be different, or have more or less terminals, but if it's lacking a copper ground strip similar to the one labelled "ground" in the photo more than likely it's NOT what you need and is for a machine using "Kettering"/battery ignition. Another thing to look for is that the correct switch will likely have a "M" terminal, and that's where the "kill" wire from your engine Magneto should be connected.

If you could post a photo of the back of your switch, that would be GREAT.

Bob! I posted on the 12th and explained what I done to get the engine running. I tried to totally abandon the original mag system, However after reading your present post I realize that I didn't know what you were talking about, when you mentioned the original kill wire, THEN I remembered the white wire, that runs from the switch towards the mag, and disappears behind the fly wheel shroud. That is still hooked up. the original spark plug wire is cut off and taped on the stub, the original wire from the mag to the points has been cut off, by me, and insulated with a plastic wire nut, but I overlooked the kill wire cause I didn't know what it was. And YES this is a 16 hp one cyl Briggs engine.
