Intek oil seal problem resolved...

I replaced the oil seals on the intake valves and it hardly smokes at all. I suppose I should have replaced the rings when I was in there. I have another 20 hp Intek on a 2002 Troybilt, and it chugs out black smoke when you throttle it up from an idle. Jeffcat said he had a simple procedure to fix that. I do have another spare Intek 20 hp engine I bought with a supposed bad rod. I think I'm going to pull the carb off that one and go through it. There are a few youtube videos on the rebuild of a Nikki carb. Jeffcat, feel free to chime in!

Yes, these 3 engines are all 2 cyl Intek B & S. 2 are 20 hp, the oldest one (2001) is a 22 hp. Watching those YouTube videos, I know the gasket you're talking about. It's probably Ethanol laced fuel that causes the swelling. The one that is a problem is one I bought used and it shows a lot of signs of abuse. It's a 20 hp 2002.

OK...did you try that little test? Another thing with these engines. The upper and lower crank case is held together with 9 ?? Bolts. Make sure all of them tight. They loosen and start to leak out of that paper thin gasket. Briggs found a simple fix......put some loctite on the stupid bolts! I prefer nail polish. Costs only a buck a bottle and the stuff holds really well. Another thing...try either NGK BPR6ES plugs or the NGK iridium plugs. They are BKR6EIX-11. Cost around $8.oo each local but go on Ebay You can find a box of four at around $16.oo. They are increadibly worth the cost. The engine will start before you can let go of the key. Don't forget a dab of copper never seize on the plug threads. Hope you change out that messed up carb. A new one will work so well I bet you will change out the other two machines. The first one I bought two years ago was 135 dollars and they now cost around 45 bucks. The parts kits cost more than that! Have fun!

I was wondering were you were going till the end. Those NIKI carbs are just plain not worth messing with. The ones on Ebay are third generation and work fantastic. The test you mention i think this is what I ment. Ubscrew the filter cover and remove the filter. Get a little pump oil can with some gasoline in it. With the engine running sqwert a little gas to the right side of the air passage. See if the engine evens out. Then sqwert some gas to the other side of the passage. If your carb is messed up you are getting 1/2 the fuel to one piston and 1 1/2 the amount to the other piston. There is a gasket with four little holes inside the carb and a couple of those holes swell up and the carb goes out of ballance.just buy a new carb. They work fantastic. Magic time!
