67' Jacobsen chief 1200

Hello yesterday's tractors members! I'm new in this forum. I just bought a 1967 Jacobsen chief 1200. My mind is blown because I'm 43 years old and have used many garden tractors. This tractor is impossible to use because 2nd and 3rd gear are insanely fast. It would break my back or I would roll the thing if I used it in 2nd and 3rd. You couldn't plow or cut grass at those speeds. I never would have guessed this would be the case. Please help. I can only guess that a pulley is the wrong size or it's a weird transmission option. I don't have an owners or service manual and I haven't found anything online on the subject. Thanks a lot.

Its possible that someone has modified it by changing the pulleys but it has a Peerless 2300 4 spd, 1st is a bull low, but mowing should be possible in 2nd and 3rd, 4th is more of a road gear.

I have to agree with Lance. You might check ebay for possible owner/parts manuals. Pictures on the
internet of 1967 Jakes are like the 4 that I own, along with my 5 Fords, a Minneapolis Mioline and a
White.
My e-mail is open if you would like to talk offline.

A lot can happen/be modified, etc. on a mower in the last 50 years. I have a Jacobsen Chief 1000, hasn't run in years, but I don't recall
being terribly fast. (Never could get it into low, for some reason.)

I don't have any manuals though.
