Are hydro static drives difficult to rebuild

I removed the hydro, last fall, from my 165 with the intention of rebuilding it. I have not touched it since then. Now I can pick up a machine that needs an engine, for $100. I think the engine swap would be easier than the rebuild. How much would it cost to do the rebuild? Is there a re build kit or is it a buy the parts separately? The problem was that it would coast down the yard and after about 20 minutes of operation it would slow down. The oil level was low and so I assumed that a seal was leaking. I have a bagger for this model of machine and it would be nice to be able to use it for yard clean up.

So did you confirm that tractor in your other thread is hydro or is this $100 machine a new tractor??

IMO those little hydros are not worth rebuilding, if you can buy a tractor with a good hydro for $100 then thats the way to go, you'll have money in your pocket and other spare parts for the future.

His reply was that it has a K46 hydro. Although the photo that was posted did not look with it had the same shifter as my 165.

You can go on U-Tube and watch some of the videos. Parts are not that expensive but why bother. As the others said, just swap engine or tranny around and you are done. Even a brand new tranny is around 300 so it depends how good of shape your machine is in.

K46 was used on the lower end John Deeres, and of course others.
Big box store mowers.
The 165 is better but not as good as the 300-series.
