B S Intek head oil seal question..

I've taken my 22 hp 2001 Intek engine ( V twin) apart. The valve seals were leaking and causing a lot of smoke on the start ups. I have the heads off, and have lapped the valves, and it looks like the intake and exhaust are different regarding the valve seals. It seems the kits for engine rebuild seem to come with only 2, so which one is replaceable? It looks like maybe the exhaust, cause it's in a lower position than the intake. I'm getting ready to order the parts to put it back together, and I need to know how many valve seals to order. Thanks...BTW, this engine has almost 1000 hours, always with full synthetic oil, and the sump was perfectly clean.

By the way. Did you buy the Briggs shop manual for those engines? Very handy. I finnaly broke down and bought one about five months ago.

Check ebay. Lots of manuals for sale, some new OEM, some black and white reprints, some "previously owned".

In most cases, if there are only 2 valve seals, they go on the intake valves. That is because there is always a vacuum in the intake, and can pull oil from the crankcase all the time it runs.

Cost around the mid $20.oo range. My local small engine parts joint had it on the rack with maybe half a dozen other manuals for different things. You need the correct part number for the manual. I will need to look it up. Is a for real Briggs book.

I ordered the B & S shop manual for the Intek twins from Amazon today. Said it would be here Saturday, and I also ordered the parts I needed today. Looking as the tops of the pistons, one is much blacker than toe other. That must be where the bad valve seal is...

Hold on there a second. You may also have a problem with the carberator. Those NIKI carbs go out of balance and one side runs very rich and the other side runs way lean. After you get your engine all back together and then see how it runs. Let us know and if you don't get a full two cylinders I'll give you a very simple way to anilize it. The replacement carbs on Ebay are only around $50.oo if that.

You never had any trouble with the exhaust valve guide working it's way out, causing the pushrod to bend and the engine miss? Have heard of that on a lot of Briggs twins here. Just got a 24 hp back up and running again in a Husqvarna garden tractor...843 hours. Repaired the guide and runs sweet now. Bought it cheap and is a nice back-up mower.
