jd 212 variator

my 212 has developed a vibration in the drive system that from exsperiance feels like a belt wiping or one that in slipping,,last spring i had the 2 drive belts replaced and it acted different but not enough to concern me ,,but yesterday it was hard to move the var handle and the handle would go all the way forward and no change in speed a few times it was so hard to move the handle that it would snap very loudly as if the handle had a built in safety clutch
.when it snaps the handl clicks forward about3/8 of an inch and no speed change noted if i need to work on it can the variator be removed as one piece ?since my stroke 5 yrs ago i have about 30 % loss of the left arm, i hope it is not like working inside a dead mules butt if ya can seemy limitation thanks all for your knowledge and time, john

You can download a manual (.pdf format) at the link below.

Might be as easy as adjusting the variator. Start your tractor, put the variator lever in the 5th notch. On the side of the tractor below the handle is a snap in plug. remove the plug you will find a bolt that uses a 3/4" socket. Loosen that bolt, pull your pedal up while the engine is running, then tighten the bolt. Your Variator should be adjusted.

Bob I got those diode today thanks. A question for you. On a VAC I have with a Delco 10si I have a diode in line but it does not shut off like it should. You think maybe a bad diode or a problem in the alternator it self?

Wholy schnikies, that was FAST!

I'd test the diode with an Ohmmeter, or simply replace it and see what happens.

Geo told me a few years ago to use a light bulb and a battery to test them. My VOM has a diode setting but the battery test works better for some reason. By the way I also have a ballast resister in line with the diode which either one should work to stop the back feed but does not so that is why I am thinking a bad alternator but it does charge the battery thanks for any insight. I need to dig up your e-mail to ask you something else by the way
