Rear carrier

The other day I had a few things to take to the back yard. It's hard to carry things along on the garden tractor unless you hook up a trailer. I got an idea to make this carrier, I used what I had on hand. The box hooks on the back without tools, the hooks were from discarded bed frame rails, the box was a tool box drawer from the scrapyard.

I have a one on my Columbia.... originally I made the support brackets to put a winch on the rear and not interfere with the 3pt hitch or attachments but the winch rarely got used so I swapped it out for small toolbox.

I think the vast majority of buyers just want a beer holder;)

I have a mower with a factory dump cart on the back and even thats not enough some days...

Years ago Craftsman made one like that but bolted to rear of garden tractor which I have on one of my tractors.

I know with me it would be an instant shinn buster. Have to be so careful with my legs because of blood thinner. Nice idea but that is why I have an assortment of tow behind trailers. Many many years ago I built a metal box that bolted onto the rear of my first Snapper rear engine mower. Made it out of 5/16 plate. You could stand the machine up on it. Would put fence repair tools and supplies in it. Also a small metal screwtop can with emergency gas. Shame when I scraped the machine it went with it. We all have fun reinventing different types of the wheel.

The Deutz Allis were built by Simplicty in the late 80s and early 90s, also available in orange with Agco Allis stickers. Most had wooden railings on a rear tilting flat deck but the dump cart was also OEM, they're basically a tractor with the seat on backwards, hydraulic drive, 16hp Vanguard twin, 42" or 48" decks, optional snowblowers but I havent come across one of those yet. Ive brought home 7 of the tractors so I must like them. Lol

Here's Hesston's version...

I have one, with a cab, but it's not in running order at the present time.

Thats a cool unit... I had an articulated Bolens but it didnt have any rear storage and the engine cover was too flimsy to add any sort of box or racks to it.

Alot of older Cub Cadets had a good storage box under the seat, heavy ga steel so you could fill it with weights or chains or tools... Ford LGT series had one also.... these days you a beer holder and cruise control

ACTUALLY, think it was only the 1x6/1x7 series models that had that tool box area under the seat. 1x8/1x9
and all newer models had the battery under the seat. The 1x2/1x3 & 1x4/1x5 were narrow frame tractors,
totally different fenders and rear frame.

You don't really need to carry tools on a Cub Cadet, they very seldom break down. On my 982 Cub Cadet
with the Cat 0 3-pt I built a scale sized IH Carry-All, had removable wood slat sides and rear, was 45
inches wide by 16 inches long by 16 inches high, could lower down onto the ground, hold my chainsaw, gas
can, jug of bar oil, pruning loppers, pruning shears, gloves, plus pull either of my carts, but I made it
TOO NICE, never used it, ended up giving it to a friend who also had a garden tractor with Cat 0 3-pt.

Yes the Deutz are manual lift, Ive kicked around the idea of putting a winch on one but I rarely find a need to lift the deck so its never happened... I put a storage tray(which I originally made to fit a JD525) out front instead, I carry one of those spring loaded picker sticks with me and pickup any dog bones or sticks or whatever else the wind blows in that I come across and drop it in there, saves having to get off the tractor.

and OK... [b:8f82430eec]SOME[/b:8f82430eec] old Cubs have a built in storage box... I just happen to have had a few of them

Im not brand bias towards or against Cubs but I buy/sell used lawn and garden equipment....SOME of the Cubs I have had here include an Original, 102,126,127,382,1450,1650,LTS12.5,1862 and Loboy... thats just a short list and every one was broken and in need of repair when I got them... they break just like any other brand.

Some Case tractors also had built in storage compartments, 150 and 448 here right now both do. Not everyone needs them but for those that do the extra space, big or small, can be very handy regardless if its OEM or user built. I have several trailers but I dont always want to drag one a half mile across the pasture to mend a fence or whatever other small chore might be at hand.

We need more pics of user built storage addons.... Im always looking for ideas;)

Today I changed oil in the van. Instead of driving it up on ramps I parked over the side ditch. Put a large piece of cardboard underneath. Then used the little carrier to haul 6 qt. bottles of oil, filter, socket and ratchet, filter wrench and catch pan. Thought it was pretty handy. And it was less bother not using the ramps.

I mounted a 5 gal. Bucket on drawbar and a couple of other brackets on back on my JD.
No pict available at this time. Handy for pruning snips, saw, small sticks and other yard debris, etc.
