Nieghbor has a lawn tractor with a briggs 24 hp engine Sometimes will crank (and start) and sometimes won't crank. Have some troubleshooting to do, BUT will any 12 v generic(Napa, Advance Auto etc) solenoid for a garden/lawn tractor work? Thanks for any help

It should be no problem. The best price is Ebay or even Wallmart. Everyone else is going to over charge you by at least twice the price. there are several types so just get the right one.

There are differences in those solenoids that all look alike. Some need that signal terminal to be powered to activate, and some need that terminal GROUNDED by the signal wire to operate.Years ago I spent many wasted hours trying to make solenoids work, only to find out I had the wrong ones. They were used that way on some garden tractors,so you really need to know just how yours operates.Hot to the solenoid or ground the solenoid. Also, those grounding type solenoids were used on the glow plug systems of the 70's-80's 5.7 GM diesels. Those were what I wasted so much time on by trying to just stick on a Ford type solenoid.Once you figure out what you need any brand,or configuration of the same function will work.

When dealing with an overgrown lawn mower that doesn't start all the time, it is FAR more likely that one or more safety switches or the wiring associated with has gotten a bit 'flaky' from years of dust, moisture, and vibration than it is that the starter solenoid has "failed".

DEERE, (and probably others as well) has provided a "starting improvement kit" consisting of a "Bosch-style" "ice cube relay" that uses a small relay to switch the power to activate the starter solenoid.

If you understand basic electricity, you could set up such as system, as well.
