New IH Cub Cadet 982 owner here.

New User
Hi all.
Yesterday, I brought home a one owner 982 Cub Cadet. It spent all of its life in Big Sandy, TN. and now it has a home here in Kentucky.

I'm very excited to own this Cub! It's a beaut! I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask. First, let me say that I ordered the Service Manual from this website (can't wait to get it!).

1. Did IH make a Snow Blade for the 982?
2. When throttling up, it makes a popping noise. Is this a valve adjustment issue?

Thanks for your time if you respond. Glad to be back on this site after being away for 14 years. I had a 1940 Farmall H and lost it in a divorce. :(

Anyway, back on here now with a new project.

Yes, IH made 54" Snow Blade [b:1837ff603c]190-401-100[/b:1837ff603c]

The popping noises could be numerous. I would suggest first cleaning the Fuel Delivery System. Starting with the Fuel Tank and work all the way forward to the Carb. Make sure it is clean and you are using fresh gas.

It's on the to do list. I thought it was odd that when I test drove it, it ran fine. When I get it home, it was popping like crazy.
Ok, will clean it up, and report back in a few days.
Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

Bedell is right on. Did anyone put an inline fuel filter on her?
Change it. Should look like the picture. I buy them at car shows like
50 at a time. Sell them to friends and always have plenty on hand.
Popping usually means gas problems. That machine should be running Hi-
Test gas. Just spend the extra .50 cents. Go to the car part joint and
buy a bottle of StarTron. Pretty blue color put a little splash in the
gas. Cleans all of the nasty from ethinol in your gas tank. Unscrew
the little plug from the bottom of the bowl and let out any water in
the carb. bowl. These are the first place to start points. You got an
absolutely beautiful looking machine. Please take good care of her!!!

Thanks, going to start work on it Monday (working 12 hr shifts this weekend). Will keep you guys informed on my progress. Again, thanks to everyone for the info! I appreciate it greatly!

UPDATE: I drained the tank, replaced the fuel filter, fuel lines, spark plugs, air filter and pre filter and battery. It does run somewhat
better, but still not right. I just got the notice in my email today that my Service Manual has shipped! When I get it, I can do more work on
the carb.
I am going to film a short piece and show how it runs if any of you guys would like to see it.

The ignition points are actually located where they can be coated with oily engine blow-by gases, The points eventually get coated with oil, and the cheap imported condensors available today, even from OEM Onan/Cummins are junk. Last set I bought cost over $65. and the last two sets I bought didn't last 100 hours each set. Small Engine Warehouse doesn't make a repower engine kit for a 982 any longer. But the tractor they show on their website IS MY Tractor.

There's so many things wrong with the design of the Onan engine. Some can be fixed, but the terribly high parts prices is only going to get worse. Most guys are replacing the Onan with a newer Kohler OHV engine.

It took me just over 4 hours and a bit over 4 gallons of gas to mow my 2.3 acre lawn with my 982 & 50C mower. My new Cub Cadet Tank LZ zero turn mower, 27 hp Kawasaki engine and 54 inch deck, I use just a bit less than 3-1/2 gallons of gas and mow same yard in less than 2-1/2 hours. And the lawn looks WAY better.

Haven't been able to work on the 982 lately. My Father passed away recently and we are dealing with moving his things. I buried my Cub
under some of his stuff.
Anyway, I'm still open to suggestions on what to try next.
My thoughts:

1. Remove carb, clean and reinstall.
2. Buy 93 octane gas.
3. I did put some STP fuel treatment in the tank (after the work I mentioned above).
Dr. Evil mentioned above could be a firing problem?
Should I just replace the coil???

Ok, guys, looking forward to the responses!

Also, I've read some on the "Repower" thing, looks expensive and troublesome.

UPDATE:
My points don't do anything when I'm trying to start the engine. I took the cover off, they are fairly clean, but I don't see any movement.
Replace?
Looks like fun setting them. (sarcasm).

3hounddogs:

but I don't see any movement.

Typically, this would indicate...
(A) The points are out of adjustment
(B) The Push Rod is worn (if equipment)
(C) The Points Assembly is broken.

got new points and condenser on the way.
Any other advice or input is very much appreciated!

UPDATE: 9/15/2018

Installed new points and condenser this morning. I can see them moving now! :D

Now, any advice on how to set the points???
I"ve got my service manual and I am going to read that this afternoon when I wake up (I'm working nights this weekend).
Thanks to all for your replies and I look forward to more input on this.

You are much better off buying OEM manuals rather than copies. The same goes for OEM parts rather than "will fit" parts. I'd be looking for a
spare mower deck in good condition also. You will be glad you did.

We got her up and running now!
New points was the key.

Yesterday, I took the cover off of my deck. Some rust and pitting, not too bad.
Ordered blades. Got some sandblasting to do and some light welding also on the deck.

I've been joy riding the heck out of it!
:D
