Recently the battery indicator warning light came on while mowing so I was using a battery maintainer to keep the battery up between uses. Last week I took the mower to a shop for repair. Today I got it back, the repair guy said he replaced the voltage regulator. This evening when I was mowing the battery light was off at first but soon was back on. Is there a common problem with these Kawasaki engines not charging? It's 20 years old and this is the first problem I've had.

If he really DID replace the VR, I wonder if the connector needed to be replaced, as well, NOT uncommon for a poor connection there to cause heating and damage to the connector.

Plugging a new VR into a damaged connector is a guaranteed failure in the making.

Have you actually put a volt meter on it and confirmed that its not charging? My 318 will light the charge light when the pto is on, but a voltmeter says its still putting out over 13v.

Also it could be the clutch coil using all the current from the charging system.

I haven't checked it with a meter but when I put a charger or maintainer on the battery it's partly ran down. The clutch coil is a possibility, although now that I think about it the light's on when the mower's not engaged.

I have a GT 235 and the battery light has gone off and on for the last 15 years or so. I never have battery problems nor starting problems. My local dealer says ?we know?! We have several that do that and can?t seem to find the problem or source of it, yet causes no problems. Says too much time and expenses to search it out. Seems to be a design fault and to just live with it. Might be in the light or they think in the circuitry. They say just let it be.
