I'm in the process of building a truck out of a Montgomery Ward/Gilson front end and a Cub Cadet hydrostic rear end. The right angle gearbox on the Gilson went bad about the same time the transmission on my John Deere 112 tractor went bad. I took the trans from the Gilson and by changing the trumpets on the trans mission the Gilson fit right onto the JD and in the process got rid of those worthless splined hubs on the origional JD transmission. So my question is this, in the picture of the CC hydro transmission there are two fittings at the front top of the transmission that I think were connected to a hydraulic lift on the CC tractor. Can I just cap these fittings or replace them with plugs ?

I am thinking (and maybe someone will correct me if I am wrong). The that transmission has an actual Hydraulic pump built into it for for use with such things as a lift, snow blower etc.

If you plug it off it will cause the unit to be forced to go into "bypass" (overload) and constantly force the overload valve to be open. It could cause the pump to overheat if as if it is being over worked at all times. You could do two things. Install a hose from one fitting to the other to allow the oil to continually circulate (like having a control valve in "neutral" or open position). Or you could install an oil cooler. It would serve the same purpose as a plain hose looping the pump except you will be cooling the oil allowing the transmission to run much cooler.

I believe you are correct in that these ports should be looped together if they are not being used.
The flow would be coming from a priority valve on the internal charge pump so capping them off
would cause a relief valve bypass all the time which obviously wouldn't be good.

If I were doing a project like this I'd use the circuit to power a hydraulic dump bed!

In answer to your question...NO

Simply fabricate a "return loop" and you will be good to go. A "U" shaped pipe connected to both ports.
