I have a 1995 345 JD bought new, ran very well, but for the last year it has been hard on plugs and fouls/ back fires, I have done all the maintenance myself. Burn only highest octane gas, cleaned carburetor, filters changed, I noticed yesterday I have a nut retainer on the right of the air intake stack, part no. M76133, that has cracked the plastic holding it so there may be a leak here.
I see a rubber hose attached to the stack, is this a crancase vent?, or what? I am going to disconect to see what happens, also how can I be sure the choke is open after changing to running position. The engine is running very rich, the plugs are black with thich sooth.

Thanks for any help

God bless
Jim

I'd start with cleaning carb and verifying air filter is in good condition. Fought one of these once and found flywheel key very slightly sheared.

(quoted from post at 20:08:33 06/10/12) I'd start with cleaning carb and verifying air filter is in good condition. Fought one of these once and found flywheel key very slightly sheared.

I did all of the above, except flywheel, found removing the crankcase tube from the air intake stack seemed to help, slight pulsating, but even that seems to be improving.

Thanks
God bless

High octane gas can cause valves to stick and makes some fantastic backfire . usually occurs aftre hard pulls .
