Snapper 8/28- good machine?

Hey guys. I'm looking at a Snapper 8/28 riding mower on my local classifieds. It has the newer style sheet metal, rectangular steering wheel, and 8hp Briggs I/C engine with electric start. The seller claims it runs and cuts just fine and was recently serviced. They're asking $300.00 for it. I know nothing about Snappers. Provided its in good shape is this a fair deal? Any known trouble areas on these machines?

Find out what the year of the engine. If it is more than 10 years old, I would pass on it. Mode/Type/Code. 111111 1111-11 xx111111. xx would be the year of the engine. $300 is reasonable. Some people really like them. I do not prefer them.

Make sure it drives in all speeds. It probably uses a disc as a transmsission and they wear out at the normally used speed. No knocking sound from engine. Make sure it starts easily. Brakes properly. Make sure blades turn on and off properly. Make sure blade shaft bearing is not worn out. Check when the engine is off only.

If any safety switches are bypassed, walk away from it.

I use a 8-26, with an engine date code, 1979. Mine has handle bars, no safety switches. It is electric start, with pull rope. It starts the first pull (no battery in it, but starter works fine). It was bought new by family, so I know nothing has been done to engine. I think they were the best mower sold, for mowing only. They are not a tractor. The drive disk, is easy to replace.

I've got one I bought to fit in a small trailer I have. It's an early
80s model by engine code, I've never had a problem that the
snapper shop didn't have parts on hand to fix. Everything's
usually very reasonable on it. I think I paid ten bucks for a
clutch disk and about thirty for the piece the shifter slides in to
get it back running in all speeds again. I don't know I would
jump on that deal real quick, that's on the high side of what
they sell for around here. Usually they can be found on
Craigslist around 250 -350 in running shape. Good luck with it

I have a snapper rear engine rider I bought new 26 years ago. Never had any major issues. Of course it requires a little maint. here and there. It has mowed grass every year since purchased. It does the best job of any mower I've owned.
