I recently bought a used X720 with a 27HP, fuel injected Kawasaki engine. It runs rough and the exhaust stinks of raw gas. Can the FI be adjusted to run leaner, or am I in for some expensive dealer work?

Don't think you can adjust it. Make sure the fuel return line isn't plugged or kinked. They don't like old fuel either.

Does it run pretty smooth under no load? Those engines can have a dead cylinder and still run pretty good until you kick the deck on. If old gas has been ran threw, the vavles can stick and pop the push rods off. Pull the vavle covers of and check, may or may not be bent.

It smoothes out when the mower kicks in, or when idling once it warms up. The exhaust smell is what really bothers me. When through with a job, I pull it into the garage, and shut it down and the wife complains about the smell in the house. It's that strong, and seems to be worse if it is not run long enough to get it up to operating temp. I bought it last August, and it's had several tankfulls of gas run through it, so don't think it's bad gas. I really believe it's running rich, but don't have a clue as to how to find out for sure. Guess I'll bite the bullet and see if the JD dealer has a way to analyze it. BTW, it's got a new air cleaner on it, so that's not choking it down.

My guess would be a leaking injector. I used to work on those and never had one problem those. If it smells of raw full so bad, is the oil level rising?
