1970 Gilson

Tried starting when very cold, turned over slowly. Put charger on in start engine mode, still turned over slow. Put heating rod in oil fill slot the oil thinned. Tried to start in engine start and it just clicked. Tried several times and just heard a click. Can anyone advise?
Thanks, Fred

If eng a 16hp briggs-does eng have a starter motor with bendix drive for a ring gear flywheel or a starter/generator with belt drive to pulley on flywheel?

Sounds like a poor or loose connection on the cables. Clean the battery terminals and cables and also clean the connections at the solenoid and starter.

It is a 12HP with combination starter generator. When I first tried the very cold start there were a couple of ignition puffs.

Will go over the terminals tomorrow. I believe trying to start with charger in engine start mode may have damaged something. My first car a '37 Ford at times had a start problem and to get it going I had to do something with the solenoid. It was located engine side of the firewall. That was 70 years ago and I cannot recall what I did.

have a cub cadet, has gen-starter combo also,,,,always charge batt up first thing before using new season,, and clean connections too, then it spins fast enough to start with ease all year long..

the engine start mode seems like it never gives enough juice, better using a battery to jump to get more power to start.

Try chargeing battery for several hrs as bob said, after that check battery with a hydrometer or connect a voltmeter to battery & watch meter when trying to start eng,if voltage falls below 10v remove battery & have load checked or replace battery, while waiting for battery to charge check all battery cable connections, also if temp below 32 deg, change eng oil to 5/30 or 10/30 as per briggs manual if you haven't done so already,a battery with weak/bad cell(s) will drink voltage/current from charger even in booster mode, leaving little/nothing for s/g,this will happen in warm weather & only gets worse in cold weather.

IF battery & cables check out ok,take a jumper cable from battery pos(+) to A terminal on s/g,see if same cranks eng,if s/g still turns slow or not at all remove s/g from eng & check for worn/sticking brush's & worn bearings,if you can't find anything anything wrong take s/g to a shop that repairs auto alt/starters & have them check, you may have bad field coil(s) or an open winding in armature.

IF s/g cranks eng with jumper cable check sol for same, sol may be worn internally & sticking or contacts bad.

I have a Wards tractor made by Gilson with a S/G
and I use a full size car battery. I installed a Walmart battery with the side terminals like what GM vehicles used. This was used since the posts on a regular battery would hit the hood. Do a tuneup with new points and condenser plus a new sparkplug. I've had this tractor 41 years. Hal
PS: You can see that battery in the tractor in this picture. I also had to install new battery cables using the GM battery.

My first msg this morning did not show up.
I always keep the terminals in top shape however, to be safe I cleaned them and terminals at s/g and ground. I always use a car battery.
I did the positive terminal to positive on s/g there was a loud clicking at the sol and no turnover.
On Gilsons the sol is located under the battery and in a very tight place. Not sure how to test the sol or what to look for.
I certainly appreciate all of your input, you are great guys. Am about ready to go remove the sol.

Try disconnecting cable from sol at A terminal of s/g,connect a voltmeter/12v test light to end of cable, turn key to start position,if sol good/working ok you'll read battery voltage with meter or light will go on,if meter reads lower than battery voltage or light flickers/dim then problem inside sol, either mech wear or contacts going bad,do test 5-6 times, mech wear/bad contacts don't always show up the 1st time.

I wish to thank all of you in responding to my problem. In guess my age near 87 is showing. The problem was the s/g the brushes were shot. Arm will survive.
If you have a Gilson/Ward machine with the sol under the battery test it before removing. It is one frustrating place to get at and get the connections back on. WOW I don't bend very well.
THANKS again. You guys are great.
Fred

I replaced the solenoid on my Wards tractor and
it was a little different that the orignal where the mounting tags were. I could hardly see in there and hydraulic yoke hit that and caused a dead short. Had to replace one of the battery cables and I reinstalled the old solenoid.
I located another solenoid that would probably work. The number on it is SS597A. The Federated auto store has this solenoid. I'll soon be 79 so you're doing ok at 87. Here's a pic of my Wards tractor it will be 41 years old next month. Hal

Am doing OK despite the fact that on 22 July '09 I fell 65' down a gulley bank was airlifted to Upstate medical. Had a broken neck, ruined left shoulder and some internal injuries. Prayed to die for two months in the hosp and after getting home. It was a long trip, have a new limited use left shoulder and neck movement. My mind set is OK now. People say, "Look at you, you are walking, talking, and have a good sense of humor." A shortened long story and one hell of a trip. Fred

Fred, I'm glad you're doing ok now. These shock trauma hospitals can do wonders. In 2005 my neighbor was standing on a ladder using an electric chain saw to cut an overhanging limb.

The tree belong to his next door neighbor and around noon that day his wife called me and told her husband was knocked off the ladder when the limb fell and swung around hitting the ladder.
I told her to dial 911 and I jumped up and went over and he was wanting to get up and I told him to lie still and I scratched the bottom of his feet and I asked him if he felt that and he said he could. I told him you're very lucky. The EMT's arrived and told him we're sending you to shock trauma. He didn't want to go and I told him you will get the best care there. They flew him by helicopter to Baltimore. It messed up his shoulder and he made a full recovery. They repaired his shoulder. Hal

Joe,
You were correct about the brushes. They were shot. You can see all responses under the first heading/entries with my name.
Thanks to all involved.
Fred
