Should I fix it?

I have a little CASE XC116. It is from their yard tractor line for those who are not familiar with the non-hydrive ones. It has a Peerless 800 transaxle and I am missing 1st and 2nd gear, and 3rd is hard to find. 4th and 5th as well as reverse work. I have been into the large frame Simplicity and Hy-drive CASE transmissions but never into the sealed type transaxles. Are they expensive to fix? Is there any others who used this transaxle? I have downloaded 2 different PDF service manuals from the web, doesn't look like hard work to take it apart. I also thought of swapping in something hydro. Any thoughts? The tractor has a Briggs 16hp opposed engine in it so power is not a problem.

The John Deere 111 used that series transaxle. There's probably a hydro that bolts right in since the 111 was available as a hydro.

The hot setup in a manual transaxle appears to be the Tecumseh 820 but it is not exactly a bolt-in replacement. Close, but some tinkering is required. There's a guy selling a $400 kit to put a $200 transaxle in that $200 lawn tractor. Cheap way would be to buy a tractor with a blown engine and a good transaxle and swap parts until it works.

The Peerless 800 series was a fantastic 5 speed transaxle. Since Tecumseh faded into the sunset, I believe Husqvarna purchased the rights to Peerless only, as the parts business will be valuable asset, plus they were king of the hill for lawn tractor market.
The shift keys are worn out. I would also replace the gears 1,2, & 3, as they are the ones you will use the most. No gaskets on this unit. And order a tube of the Bentonite (clay based) grease. I have used regular litium grease in an emergency, and the trans lasted for years afterwards! This is an easy fix if you are mechanically inclined.
