Gums rapidly in fuel tank & fuel delivery systems as it ages, attracts moisture from the atmosphere, forming an ethanol/water solution,it becomes stale causesing hard starts pinging and engine knock, ethanol causes lost power, performance and decreased fuel economy. What is it good for?-

precisely why you should not store fuel over 30 days.I use gasahol in every gasoline thing I use, I use Briggs and Stratton stabilizer or Sea Foam in it and never have an issue. I use those 2 because they are a petroleum based stabilzer. i will not use Stabil, as Stabil is an alchohal based stabilizer and it does not work all the time. All the engines manufactured now are 10% ethanol compatable, anything more than 10% is unacceptable.

Most people use it for fuel. If you have that many problems you might want to check your maintenance schedule.

I've used E10 since 1985, the only clogged carb I've had was my Y2K generator that sat for 3 years without being started.

well, you are a lucky person, I used to use Stabil until Knox industustries sold it to Gold Eagle, now, I have had a lot of customers bring mowers in to various places I have worked with Stabil in the gas, and the gas is stale. The MSDS on Sea Foam lists the active ingrdiants as the following:
Ingredients
CAS # Wt.%
"Pale Oil" 64742-54-7 40.00 - 60.00 N/Av >15000 mg/kg >5000 mg/kg
"Naphtha" 64742-49-0 25.00 - 35.00 N/Av >5000 mg/kg N/Av
"IPA" 67-63-0 10.00 - 20.00 17000ppm 4720mg/kg 12890mg/kg

Unless IPA is another name for alchohal, I do not see it on the list.
Cannot find an MSDS on Stabil, but the shelp life on an opened bottle of Stabil is only 2 years, as the shelf life on SeaFoam is a lot longer, and from what a rep told me that does not sell Sea Foam, the Stabil has alchohal in it and that is why it has a 2 year shelf life after opened.
I will say again, I and a lot of my customers have had very bad luck with Stabil as a gas stabilizer.
if you can find an MSDS on Stabil that shows it is a petroleum based product and not alchohal, I will gladly admit I am wrong, I was just telling like I have been told by engine reps that see this kind of product and problems every day

I've never had any trouble with the ethanol blend. I don't like because I don't like being forced buying something AND paying more for it. I'll bet if they offered both a gas station that ethanol would go bad before it sold even though you are already paying for a part of it's cost with your tax dollar.

I finally found an MSDS on Stabil, it has one ingrediant listed as potentially hazardous, it is propanol, 95%, with 5% additive mixture

We will see what happens to alchohal after 2011, the gubment has been talking about getting rid of the tax breaks on it at the end of this year...

JT, you need to check the facts. Ethanol is traded just like oil on a commodity market. This is what drives its price. It was put in place as an oxygenate to replace MTBE which is a ground water contaminate. Tom

I can remember the Bush Administration did say they would give tax breaks to any business getting into the ethanol production business. This not long after gas prices spiked to $4 a gallon the first time. The ethanol producers probably have their own lobby on Capital Hill pushing their agenda just like everyone else.

And yes, it brings in a lot or business for the small engine repair men.

And customers "Just don't understand why their gas went stale and they need a new carburetor. I just treated my machine like I always did.".

I have had gas go bad in as little as Three months--with Stabelizer. I have not had a problem since I started using premium (without alchol) :!:
I don't know if all Premium brands are alcohol free :?:
I know it cost more but I was tired of wasting gas and cleaning carburetors.

Yes, it is traded, but there are also tax breaks on it from the gubment to blenders using it

to dhermesc. And Yes the BIG OIL sweeties do get a nice blenders credit. Still gonna keep right on burning it in everything I own that runs on gas. Wish I had some E85 capable stuff. Tom

I DONT LIKE STABIL IN MY ENGINES I HAD TO MANY PROBLEMS I PUT SEA FORM IN MY MOTORS AN LET THEM SET ALL WINTER LONG AN IN SPRING THEY START RIGHT UP I LIKE IT WHEN I TELL MY COUSTMERS DONT LISTEN TO ME AN PUT STABIL IN THERE MOWER AN THEN SPRING COME AN I HAVE TO CLEAN THE CARBS IN THERE EQUIPMENT THE DEALERS TELL THEM TO USE STABIL SO THEY GET YOU TO BYE IT FROM THEM AN HOPE THEY WILL BRING IT BACK IN THE SPRING WHEN IT WOUNT START SO THEY CAN MAKE MORE MONEY

I use stabil and have no problems. I tested my generator in feburary, had stabil/gas in it over 1 yr old. Started first pull, ran great.

And yes it literally started first pull.
I have 2 cycle mix with stabil I have been using in a mantis type tiller for 2 years, still going good, just tilled up a lettuce bed today with it.

I use premium gas and stabil in all my small engines and have no problems.

running second year on asome mix for a mantis type of tiller, used it today and worked fine.
gas in my generator is well over 1 year old and works fine. Well did last month when I test ran it and changed the oil in case of an ice storm.

If you've absolutely got to have an oxygenator in your gas then ethanol is a better choice than MBTE, at least the fumes from ethanol aren't killing you...

I use ethanol in my motor vehicles with good results..No frozen fuel lines or related problems for me, ever... take note: Minnesota..

My small engines are a different story.. They get the gasoline listed on the fuel dispensor as "for classic collector cars and small engines" no 10% alcohol.. Cost is $.20/gallon more. Well worth the price.. especially for seasonal use equipment(2 and 4 cycle), as it don't break down over winter like I have experienced using ethanol in the same machines..

Old farm tractors are still another story.. I like enthanol for snow removal duty for the same reason I use it in my vehicles-no problems with frozen fuel lines. But, When Auntie Allis sits around during the summer with little or no use for extended periods, she get the non-alcohol gasoline.

I am glad that I can buy both fuels locally.

I'm sure we all have our opinions on ethanol. I've been using for about 10 yrs and had never had a problem in lawn and garden engines, vehicles or my old olivers. I do kinda like the higher corn prices because of it
