I bought a small skid steer loader. It has no data plate anywhere. It does have "Commander" stickers on the lift arms. It has an unknown (to me) engine. the guy I got from said he thought it was a kohler but he didnt know either. No stickers, dataplate nada on the engine. It does have casting 170-2667 under the crankshaft at the back of the tractor at about 7-8 oclock in relation to the crank cover. Here is a pic.....the guy couldnt get it running, I have messed with it some filed points and took plugs out. They are new looking autolite 764 and no kidding they are gapped at like .060.

no two cyl. I just gaped those plug at 030 and that didnt help. filed and filed the points but they dont look like they are sparking much. read 12 v both side of coil, condenser looks new (i know that means squat) buddy has condensor tester, I will go try to test it i guess.

I would try another coil if a condenser doesn't help. Hal
PS: Check the battery voltage during cranking to make sure its not dropping too much. If it drops too much there may not be enough voltage for the ignition. A starter could cause this or the battery.

Hal, I have good compression and drop in both holes so I know the valves are not stuck, I put a just a reg known good coil on one cyl at a time and could not get the darn thing to really hit on either cyl. An inline fire checker (little lite) on the plug wire shows fire on both, better with the known good coil than with the two wire coil. I will try to get a good two wire coil and condensor points ald all. What would your guess be on the plug gap? What engine do I have? Onan i know from For Farmall but what model number? what else would you try. this is really a neat little skidster. I cannot find any info on Commander skidsteers. I did find what look like half a tag that says model 550? serial 162? I guess these were odd balls. thanks

I would set the gap at .025". We had the Onan
generators with the twin cylinder engine. They are contructed very well and gave good service.
I think some of the Case garden tractors used that engine. Hal

If memory serves me correct, this could be a Onan NHC 23 hp out of a JD 90 skid steer, years ranging from 1979 - 1984. The NHC was just a series of the Onan's, but there was also a P-series, but the NHC was popular in the skid steer.

Definately Onan. Watch that wire going to the points--it likes to ground out against the cover. Hold on to your wallet if you need points and condensor. About $50 for pair.

Are you getting fuel to the plugs? Sounds like you are checking eveything, you said it had compression and fire with a tester. an engine needs 3 things to run, compression, fire and fuel. also if you are gonna check into new wires, make sure they are wire cored wires, dont go to the local auto parts store and but automotive wires, they wont fire. That is an NHC engine for sure, can tell by looking at it. and if you get points, condensor and coil, hold on to your shorts, will likely be over 150.00.

Ive got the same Commander model 550. Mine is having troble with a pull to the right, front right tire always spins more then the others.
