John Deere 210 lawn tractor with 10 hp Kohler engine K241AQS, spec = 46785, serial 1603420504. Need a source to purchase a short block. The machine shop said it would be too expensive to have mine rebuilt. Need to rebore, new piston and rod and new crank. Looks like a short block is over $1,000. Any better place or ideas?
Thanks.

Rebuild of you block is cheaper than a short block even if you must sleeve the block to standard and have the crank welded and ground to standard if it was already 10 under. I just did a K-181, bored 20 over and welded and ground the 10 under crank back to standard. The bill with my labor was about $600. The parts for a K-181 and a K-241 are pretty much the same price. Piston/Rings about $150, Rod about $45, Overhaul Kit ( gaskets and seals ) about $55, Turn the crank about $45. Weld and turn the crank about $90. Bore the block about $50, Bore and sleeve block about $110. All parts prices quoted are Kohler parts which are the ONLY ones I use. If this is done RIGHT and the engine is cared for, the overhaul should last at least 10 years of average home owner use.

Try a different machine shop. It's like Kent said; all doable unless the rod came out the side of the block.

Do as been suggested and find a new machine shop.

Try going to ebay & search item# 350422840137,ask seller if he has an eng that is same spec number as your's or will this one work for replacement, might also try going to link below & read note in repower section for jd 210 about mounting ears on eng to see if this affects your eng.

Sounds a little on the high side to me. A very good shop here with a great reputation quoted me $90 to weld and grind crank, 80 to bore and sleeve to original size plus 35 to grind the vlaves. Ad in the cost of parts from NAPA (Kohler parts) and I'm still at less than $500 if I do the work myself. If I have the local Kohler dealer do it for me a total rebuild with welding the crank and sleeve job, plus valves is about 700. That's prices on a K series 14HP but basically the same engine.

Did a K series 12 HP about 4 years ago. Turn Crank, bore .010 over, press in piston pin, grind valves and remove broken stud and total cost of rebuild was 285 including parts.

BOHICA!

One thing I forgot to mention/note is you said a Short Block was over $1000. I checked several years ago about Kohler short blocks. The DO NOT sell "Short Blocks" due to EPA regs. Flat head engines are to dirty. They do sell what they call a Mini-Block. This DOES NOT have a crank shaft included. You have to buy a new crank separately which can be another $400 to $600
