i just replaced the head gasket and reassembled the motor.

i am stuck not knowing what to do with the valves. I never moved the camshaft of the pistons during the work, i put the head back on with the valves and rocker assemble, but im not seeing any clearence on the valves like the book says. how do i know when a piston is at tdc, is that whats needed to make the adjustment, should i NOt crank the motor at all? im a bit lost here.....any help would be appreciated.

Oil from the breather on the timing cover is a sign of crank case compression due to worn or stuck piston rings. Could also be blocked breather from valve cover to air cleaner.

What oil do you run in it? Some universal oils contain additives to reduce brake squeal from wet disc brakes. This will plate the bores on older engines which do limited work. Try and use a straight 20/30W diesel engine oil. I use 20/50W in all my tractors but we do not get the very cold spells in winter.

Have you been working her or do you do just light work? All diesels should be at work hard or stopped, light work or long periods of ticking over will give you that problem too.

WOW!! I had never heard that before! MUCH easier than always checking the book between each valve!

Do i need to loosen all the rockers first as they are all tight against the valves, and can i turn the motor using the strarter or by hand only?

You need to turn by hand as you need to be fairly accurate. Do not need to slacken valves off.

If you have had the head off, then you must reset the valve clearances to the required gaps as the thickness of the head gasket will change them. Easiest way to do it is with the rule of 9. Number 8 valve fully open. set Number 1. Number 7 valve fully open, set Number 2 and so on through the valve train. Turn engine until you see the vale spring fully compressed and the rocker just starting to move up by a touch.

Go slowly and recheck your settings after the engine has warmed up and you have re-torqued the head.
