Hi All,

Would appreciate any pointers please. My Dexta started losing power when I was tedding my hay, hydraulics stopped working and eventually she stopped altogether. I bled the fuel system and she and hydraulics started working again. I finished the 2 acre field but same thing happened the next time she was under load. The oil filter was changed last year (and she hasn t been used much since) and she has plenty of fuel. The other thing I discovered is that the base of the air cleaner/ oil bath has rusted away and is flapping about! I have ordered new oil bath assembly. I am a newbie to tractor ownership so excuse my ignorance, but are the two things related; air in fuel system and non functioning oil bath/air cleaner system? Many thanks

Checked the screws on the lift pump and each one was slightly loose. Just a couple of mms on each one. Was that the sort of range of movement you found on yours?

The fuel flow to the lift pump is fine.

The diaphragm in the governor seems to be functioning fine.
Many thanks

Thanks Roger in Iowa. I am hoping to take a look at it at the weekend with a friend who has lots of Fergie experience. I m sure the disintegrating air filter/oil bath must be contributing somehow!

No they are not. I agree with Majorman, I would start by checking the screen in the fuel tank shut off valve.

The remaining air cleaner may be plugged with all the debris from having.
Had it happen on a telehandler, the air filter was completely packed.
Your engine may be dusted as well. As in ruined.

Thank you Majorman. Fuel filter changed last year and she hadn t done many hours work since then. Just to clarify the hydraulics stopped working as the power decreased i.e. before engine stopped altogether.

The hydraulic pump drives from a shaft in the gearbox and is connected to the clutch so that it stops when the clutch is depressed. standard drive and when the PTO stops, on a Live drive. If the clutch was a problem, the PTO would also stop working, on a Live drive, or the tractor would stop driving forward on a standard drive. It is possible but do not think your engine problem is anything to do with the hydraulic one but, of course, can be wrong.

Check your fuel flow first by taking the pipe from the tank tap out of the lift pump and see if you have a good flow not a dribble. There is a filter in the fuel tank tap that could be blocked. Have you changed the fuel filter?

These are the easy things to check before you try anything expensive like a new lift pump.

Your hydraulics will not work if the engine is stopped.
