1962 Fordson Supermajor - Where to start?

Hello! I am new to this forum, so I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this question.

Growing up my dad had a 1962 Fordson Supermajor and it was his pride and joy. He passed away right before I turned 20 and at the time, I didn't have the means to acquire the tractor. Over the past 12 years it bounced around family members and just this August my husband surprised me by buying the tractor. I am absolutely stoked to finally have my dad's tractor back with me, but it hasn't run in about 4 years and I honestly have no idea what to even start with.

So sappy story short - could you guys be of some assistance on where to begin? Is there a generic check list of what to check/change/try in getting this old thing running? I have basic knowledge of how diesel engines run and their components, but not exactly knowledge on the repair side of things.

I plan on doing more research on the Super Majors and studying the manual, but I know a lot of the time just asking the dumb questions and getting it over with can be faster, ha.

I appreciate any help I can get - or even what to search within this forum to get started.

Thank you!

Welcome to the board. The best place to start would be to change the
engine oil and filter, the fuel filter, clean out the lift pump filter.
Then possibly, drain the fuel tank and remove the fuel tap as there is a
filter in that.

Then put in a small amount of diesel, around 5 gallons (say), mix in some
Automatic Transmission Fluid to give extra lubrication and cleaning, then
bleed the system at the fuel filter, two bleed points on the top, then the
bleed point on the injection pump. Use the hand primer until air bubbles
stop coming out. A 1962 Super may come with either a Vacuum governed
injection pump or a Minimec mechanical governed pump. If it is a Minimec
you will also need to drain the oil in the governor housing and refill to
the level plug on the side.

Now, with a good battery, try to start her. With any luck, she should fire
up pretty easily.

You may find other problems due to being not used like a stuck clutch or a
hydraulic lift that does not work. Remember the PTO has to be in gear for
the lift to work. All these things are fixable.

Workshop manuals and operators manuals are available online and we are
always here to help.

Minimec Pump on Super Major.

Thank you for the reply!

When it comes to the battery - I ve read that these use to use two 6 volt batteries versus one 12. Is that still recommended or can a modern 12 be used now?

Change out all fluids ,coolant , observe the conditions water present.

If not the first time close to it ,is get the owner operator manual and read it . Best place to start , probably buy a copy cheaply on eBay

What I suggest

If it has been sitting for any length of time it would be a good time to carefully loosen the drain plug on the rear end and the one the transmission and drain any water off that has separated from the oil. If you change or add antifreeze make sure it is a heavy duty diesel type meant for use in engines with wet sleeve engines.

A group 31 battery is perfect for any of the majors.
