Well I think it was a productive day. Ole Super started right up, she smoked horribly for some time. I let her heat up to temp , and retorqued head and reset valves. I started her back up still some white smoke so I shut her down, removed exhaust manifold. With exhaust manifold off I could see puffs of white smoke intermediately from each cylinder, also small amount of fresh oil passing out of exhaust ports. Engine sounds good, maintained good oil pressure and temp. No fuel leaks. I took MajorMans advice and replaced fuel line from rubber to metal. Pump timing is spot on at 23 degrees. I cracked each injector while running to bleed. Hopefully videos work. With your approval , I would like to start reassembling tractor and put her to work for a good break in.

Great news!!!!! I would give her some work before worrying about white smoke, nothing is bedded in yet.

I am getting on in years now but, ever since I started working on engines back in the 1960's, I have always been like a child with a chocolate bar when it comes to the first start. Have been known to stay up nearly all night with one of my tractors, just to finish it off and hear it roar. Sad, I know, but to me there is nothing like the feeling when you have had something laying in a heap of bits then getting it together and hearing it run.

Hydraulic lifts also give me a similar buzz.

Yes MajorMan, I share your love. My first go was a 1948 case VAC at the age of 12, it was a basket case that my Mother inherited from a friend. I worked on it more than I used it. learned to braze as block had a 8 inch crack, it actually held up. I don't think Mom had any idea how dangerous this old tricycle jalopy was for a 12 year old daredevil boy! Exciting day when I could finally afford to have starter motor rebuilt, hand cranking was also very dangerous for a 12 year old boy, I'm sure I still carrying pains from cranking kick backs. I love my old Super Major, she is such a work horse, I purchased her about 20 years ago at the time I never even heard of A Fordson not many around Missouri. MajorMan I appreciate all your help and advice. By the way if you are interested I did post videos of this first start up on the Modified Majors group on Facebook Thank you Sir

Wow, you think it's really supposed to be 21 degree. The reason I ask is because I'm having issue with injector pump I think. Crazy, thing will start up immediately sometimes and run perfect no smoke and lots of power, other times she is hard to start runs like crap and smoky. when it is running smoky I can pull stop cable back and forth really fast and it will clear up and run normal. I took cover off of side of pump and rack seems to be moving back and forth fine. No fuel leaks anywhere no obstruction in intake. What could I be missing.

Sounds like you may have pump problems as well. Set the timing to 21 and see if it improves. Something else I would try and have had good success with is a bottle of ATF, (Automatic Transmission Fluid) in the diesel. That will help to unstick sticking pump components. You could also squirt some in on the rack, if you have the side plate.

Has she been stood up for some time? The other problem might be the new style diesel with less sulphur.

Did you change the oil in the injection pump?

Yes I changed the oil fresh 30wt. Has only been sitting since December was working fine then. Is the click I hear while turning pump actually firing the injector or setting up to fire. Going to set timing at 21 degree tonight and see what happens.
