Ready for first start since overhaul.

Okay guy's , I think I am ready for initial start up of this engine. Couple questions first thing I expected to find engine harder to turn over by hand with injectors installed I could feel the compression while turning but still turned over with ease, yes valves are adjusted at 12 and 15, and decompression lever is in off position. Secondly I have had more than one person tell me to do first run with no water and run for a few minutes than retorque head is this a standard process which I should consider. Gentlemen any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I would not run without coolant and would use a 50/50 antifreeze mix.

Did you put a small amount of oil in each bore?

That is a great aid for a first start, compression will be down because nothing is bedded in and everything is dry. It will smoke a bit initially but will soon clear.

You will need to get it into hard work straight away, we always advised thrashing them gently for the first 50 hours. Don't overload or over rev but just keep working. Do not let them idle or go into a light job. Do not mollycoddle her otherwise you will get wet stacking and glaze the bores.

Any new tractor or engine that went to work straight away was always a better one than one that was carefully run in.

I dont advise starting the engine without coolant that is void of all air pockets , the pressure of the explosion of fuel mixture creates tremendous pressure . With out coolant the metal surfaces of various thicknesses have withstand pressure. With coolant this is a resistance to the metal deformation because it is non compress able.
My thoughts

First ; Did you pre-lub that engine?? That is with no nozzles in ; turn over engine with full crankcase of oil until you got oil pressure?? Most important to me... Next, fill cooling system with 50/50 anti-freeze.. Then start up and run.. Put tractor an dyno or work to get up to operating temperature .. If dyno, Follow break-in procedures, watch temperature and oil pressure.. With hot engine, pull apart to retorque the head and then adjust valves.. If all done correct; engine good to go for many hours.. Last, Do not let a diesel engine IDLE.. Put it to work, keep up coolant temperature or turn it off...

Just wondering did you degree your camshaft? Not say its a must do , just know its a way to get maximum performance when setting the injection timing
