Question for major man about super major

I am helping part time a one man contractor.... he has a super major with hydraulic problem, the hydraulic work ok as it will tip a 5 ton trailer load of stone ticking over it will also lift a 15 foot mounted
Drag harrow but it only lifts all the way nothing in
Between .. also when linkage is lifted it drops immediately and it keeps doing this the only way to keep harrow lifted is to pull out isolater valve
Your help would be gratefully appreciated also the guy has 2 other majors one a power major with winch and a 57/58 major.... also another guy has new performance major with no hydraulic working at all but one at a time will do

Right will try and answer. If the lift holds up when you pull the isolation valve (Auxiliary Services Valve) there is nothing wrong with the piston seal. The problem could be in two places external linkage or internal linkage, all the other places like control valve, cylinder relief valve, check valve etc. are taken out of the circuit when you pull out the ASV valve..

On the rear rocker where the top link fits, take the top pin out of the yoke that goes into the lift and see how easy the yoke moves. Depending which Super you have, on the early version you should be able to turn it in until there is no free movement. On the later model if you turn it in until there is no free movement then go a turn or two more, free movement will return. Go back to where there was no movement.

Another check with the implement mounted, on the rocker there are two pivot holes, put two pins in these holes and see if the lift still drops. If it stops the problem is the hitch between the implement and the tractor, the weight of the implement is pulling back on the top link and putting the lift in the lowering cycle.

The next place to check is the internal linkage and adjustments. It could be that the Position Control roller has worn and allowed the linkage to move back.

Have you tried it with the lift selector lever in both Draft and Position Control? In Draft Control it is very difficult to find a neutral point because the lift is designed to allow the lever to be left at the top spot in the fully raised position, a knock off pin in the lift returns the control valve to neutral automatically. In Position control you should be able to start with the lever at the bottom of the quadrant then as you move it up, the lift arms should reflect the position of the quadrant lever.

You have a few things to check, see if any of them help. When it comes to lift setting, come back and we will talk you through.

Update...... the top link bracket has been screwed in a number of times and the lift arms are not so jumpy but still drops also the guy would like to talk direct but ok if you don't want to

Hi Derwent,

Had a chat with your friend last night and I am pretty sure his problem is linkage related. He is missing the Draft/Position selector lever and this means there is nothing to hold the internal linkage in place or enable either to be selected. I made a lever for mine as a temporary measure by drilling a nut for the pin and welding a piece of slightly bent round onto it.

The New Performance problem could be the unload valve but I forgot to tell him to check the flow control valve. If you take the Auxiliary Service Chest off, the bit with the pull out knob, from both tractors, and temporally switch it with the one with the linkage problem, if the lift works, it is the flow control that is stuck. Have just sorted one for another friend. Quite easy to do, it involves removing a little roll pin and getting the plug and spring out. I then used a bit of dowel rod and tapped it into the valve, then rotated it with a small drill. You can then work the valve up and down the bore until it is free.
